No permit, background check, or training classes are required to own less-lethal defensive products like the ones listed above. In fact, the only requirement is being 18 years old. However, we highly encourage seeking some formal training on proper use and “use of force” laws.
No. Byrna launchers are powered by compressed CO2 cartridges and are not legally defined as firearms.
Most pepper spray typically has a 4-5 year shelf life. The expiration date should be printed on each can. Replace your spray or gel as soon as possible if you have to use it.
Both have their pros and cons. Pepper spray can generally be made smaller, and can therefore be easier to carry on a keychain or in your pocket. Gel typically requires a larger can, and is easy to clip to a sun visor, a book bag or keep on your nightstand. Gel is less affected by strong winds and provides a more concentrated stream, but spray covers a wider area and requires less precision. Also, pepper gel is better for inside a closed area, because gel is much less likely to be drawn into HVAC systems.
Alarms are typically around 130 decibels. This is similar in intensity to an airplane taking off.
Pepper spray/gel should not be exposed to temperature extremes, just
like any aerosol product. Temperatures above 120 F and below 10 F should be avoided.
